MissVindicat ASMR has been making whisper videos since 2010, back when the term ASMR did not exist. She posts English and Dutch ASMR videos and has seen the community steadily grow over the years…
How did you discover ASMR?
Well, I discovered the whisper community. That was back in 2009, back when the term ASMR wasn't yet being used on YouTube.
I had trouble sleeping and I remember how I just to love it when people whispered.
I started searching for whisper videos on YouTube.
First, I only found those old clips from Big Brother, that television series in which people gossip a lot. There were a lot of scenes in which people whispered.
After a while, the very first whisper video popped up. You know, the very first one uploaded by WhisperingLife.
I was hooked!
DanishVlog followed, WhisperSister, TheWhisperingvoice and in 2010 I started uploading whisper videos myself.
Has your perception of ASMR changed over the years? Has the community changed?
The community has changed completely!
In the beginning, we were just a bunch of people whispering to each other. It felt like we were in this secret society of whispering friends. It all felt a bit odd.
Hardly anybody showed their faces yet.
Most of us felt a bit weird and we were afraid people would find out. I remember DanishVlog starting to show her face and I thought she was so brave.
Many content creators suffer from burnout. Have you ever experienced this? If so, what happened and how did you manage this?
Yes, that has happened. Especially when the whispering community became the ASMR community and it all got so big.
I felt redundant.
Here I was, still creating these old school style videos while so many people were uploading these really slick videos and roleplays, and boy, I just couldn't compete.
It felt like a rat race, as if I wasn't successful if I didn't have more listeners.
What advice would you give to new ASMR content creators?
Don't compare yourself to others.
Do what you love.
Make friends.
And please, please, know that you can be perfectly successful with only a handful of subscribers.
What is the weirdest/funniest comment you’ve seen in your comments section?
Yes! Something very strange has just happened!
In one of my recent videos, I whisper while showing the view from my balcony. You see one of the main squares in the city centre where I live. It's a busy place, lots of people walking around.
One of the comments pointed out that there was a naked man running around.
First I was like, yeah, sure.
Then I decided to take a look AND BOY THERE REALLY WAS A NAKED MAN RUNNING AROUND!!
I'm still confused.
Seriously! Very odd. (Watch the video here.)
What is your favourite trigger to do on camera?
Whispering.
Rambling, mostly.
Old school and lo-fi.
What do you dislike about ASMR? What are the challenges?
Explaining it to people who don't understand it.
I still feel silly when I try to talk about it. I don't want to, I know I don't have to.
I'm getting better at talking about it.
Last year I decided to tell several of my friends. They all reacted very kindly, most of them were curious to know more.
Where do you think ASMR will be in the future?
Well, even more mainstream, I guess?
With loads of hidden gems, channels that aren't big but good and have a loyal following.
Compare your first video to your most recent video. What have you learned? What went wrong/right?
Oh, boy, so much has changed!
It's been almost ten years since I uploaded that very first one. My whole life has changed…
I broke up with my boyfriend, sold the home we lived in.
I realised I am single by heart.
I became a single mother by choice.
And all the while, I kept uploading and had this wonderful group of listeners who kept showing up and kept supporting me.
And now I have this visual diary, hundreds of videos that show me living my life.
It's been a blessing, really. I feel so very lucky that I decided to upload that very first video, however scared I was.
