Let's catch up with Tippy Tappy ASMR as he guides us through his journey as a content creator...
Why do you make ASMR?
ASMR is something that I’ve enjoyed and has helped me personally for a long time, so the idea of being able to do that for other people is really cool to me.
It’s also a really fun and creative process and it was one of those situations where I had thought to myself, ‘hey, I like this and I think I have some fun ideas that could be good for ASMR so why not give it a try and see what happens.'
I’m SUPER glad I did!
Who is your ASMR inspiration? Yikes… what a question. How do you pick just one!?
I draw inspiration from a lot of artists I personally really like and listen to. I also think my inspiration changes quite a lot as I tend to go through phases of listening to a particular artist like crazy and then switching it up when I get too used to their sound/style, but I always come back around to my faves of course.
If I had to pick one I would say FredsVoice is my biggest inspiration for sure, his voice is super relaxing, the sound and video quality is excellent and he always comes up with roleplay ideas that just grab me instantly. He also manages to make me laugh and relax at the same time which I think is difficult to do!
Phoenician Sailor is another big inspiration for me so I wouldn’t feel right not to mention him here too. If I ever reach an overall level of video quality and immersion that is one tenth of his I will be VERY happy.
A final mention is Dr.T ASMR. I love his unique style and interesting sounds and it was actually his 300k live stream that gave me the final push to go ahead and start my channel.
I remember he was nervous while explaining how he wasn’t confident on his livestream and I just thought to myself ‘if someone I’ve always thought of as an absolute pro at ASMR is still a little nervous then I definitely shouldn’t let something like nerves stop me’.
My first video went up 10 days after that!
The last 5 ASMRtists you watched and why? 1. DennisASMR
His trigger sounds are simply incredible every single time. I don’t see him involved with other artists very often but I definitely think his focus and dedication to finding good sounds has earned him a place at the top.
2. Karuna Satori ASMR
She has a very unique style and certain mannerisms that mean I actually get visual ASMR from a lot of her movements, I don’t seem to get this from other artists (I usually just listen to ASMR rather than watch) of course her voice and personality are equally great for helping me relax and feel cozy too!
3. The ASMR Ryan
His roleplay videos have me laughing the whole way through, great energy and personality with quality sounds!
4. Jimち ASMR
He recently released a crooked cop stakeout video and I just thought the idea was super unique and interesting so I HAD to watch it!
5. Gibi ASMR
She does a whole lot of great things for the community and she’s always coming up with fun video ideas. I was also in the video in question so of course I was super excited when I realised!!
What is the weirdest/funniest comment you’ve seen in your comments section?
Someone once said that I was 'like the hot ginger brother of Ross from Friends… but with Tingles’.
I should probably make that my tagline because it’s better than the comments saying I look like Nigel Thornberry.
What is your favourite trigger to do on camera? I really have a lot of fun getting lost in my roleplay characters and of course... tapping!
What do you dislike about ASMR? What are the challenges?
I live in a city, so I have never once come close to being able to record a whole video in a single take without having to stop repeatedly, over and over and over again due to city noises!
Typically, my recordings are three times longer than the final video as a result of editing out noise and that can sometimes be frustrating for sure!
Something I do dislike is the fact that there are a lot of strong and loud views from people about what is right or wrong in ASMR. There are 100% styles or sub genres of ASMR that aren’t for me (and people I think are probably in it for reasons very different from mine) but I strongly believe that people should try hard to focus on themselves, their own growth, their own community and goals and let other people be happy.
Where do you think ASMR will be in the future?
I think it’s definitely going to tail off in terms of YouTube popularity.
Right now it’s been a bit of an “in” trend and it’s really clear that a lot of people are jumping in just because of that.
There are loads of channels reacting to or mocking ASMR content because it’s a big thing right now and you even have a lot of bigger channels trying ASMR or doing ASMR with guests and so on (despite having never been ASMR channels or even interested in it) all of the hype is fun but I think it will calm down before too long and go back to just being a useful tool for helping people to relax, feel good and sleep.
Hopefully the one big thing that will come out of the current popularity wave will be that it becomes better understood by mainstream audiences and some of the stigma we currently deal with goes away (that would be nice).
Compare your first video to your most recent video. What have you learned? What went wrong/right?
I’m quite fond of my humble beginnings and I actually think my first video was okay as a starting point. I mean it wasn’t *good* but my style was there right from the start (lots of alliteration and using “T” words etc).
It was also a fun little ‘Tingle Tavern’ video and has ended up being the start of the ‘Tingle Realms’ which is my little fantasy world setting where I weave together some of my roleplay videos into a connected overarching story.
I knew none of that at the time of course but looking back on it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
In terms of a few things I have learned or improved on: camera placement; mic placement; colour correction; audio editing in post and to take it slowly with the speech and…
USE A POP FILTER!
I’ve also invested a lot into my setup and equipment and I’m currently waiting on a few new things to arrive which are hopefully going to mean another BIG step up in quality.
Realistically I have come a long way in a short space of time but it’s also quite clear to me that I still have LOTS of things to work on and improve…I am really trying, so stay with me!
